My job isn't writing code. It's creating solutions that improve someone's life. It may be invisible work, but it's my way of contributing.
What still hooks me: that moment when something you designed solves a real problem for someone.
What I learned in 20 years
Bad news doesn't get better with time
If a project is going to be delayed, I'd rather say it on day 3 than day 30. Solve problems together before they escalate.
Many problems aren't software problems
I've seen technically perfect projects where users still email Excel files to each other. Before writing code, I ask: is this really a software problem?
I listen twice as much as I talk
Software problems are rarely just technical. There are people, context, history. Often the best solution isn't code but two hours with pen and paper.
Leaders don't have all the answers
I learned that if your team doesn't feel comfortable telling you when you're wrong, you've already lost. Trust is earned, not assumed.
